چکیده

Jaw-opening dystonia (JOD) is a type of oromandibular dystonia in which patients suffer from prolonged lateral pterygoid muscle contraction causing sustained jaw opening. Patients have difficulty eating and speaking, often drool uncontrollably, and suffer from a poor quality of life. Therapeutic options for this disease are limited, making this a challenging problem to address. We describe the use of a novel sensory feedback device (SFD, Allergan Pharmaceuticals, Irvine, CA) in addition to conventional treatment with oral medication and botulinum toxin A (Botox) injections in the management of JOD. This device provides immediate relief of dystonic symptoms and allows patients to depend less on other methods of treatment.

Complications of Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy in Patients with Mandibular Prognathism

Introduction: Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) of mandible is vastly used in treatment of mandibular deficiencies and discrepancies. Since this method could affect esthetic as well as function, evaluating these effects from various aspects is crucial. This study assessed the effects of this technique on the function of masseter muscle, jaw movements, and sensory changes along with fail...

Clinical, Etiological, and Therapeutic Features of Jaw-opening and Jaw-closing Oromandibular Dystonias: A Decade of Experience at a Single Treatment Center

BACKGROUND Dystonia is a heterogeneous hyperkinetic disorder. The anatomical location of the dystonia helps clinicians guide their evaluation and treatment plan. When dystonia involves masticatory, lingual, and pharyngeal muscles, it is referred to as oromandibular dystonia (OMD). METHODS We identified patients diagnosed with OMD in a Movement Disorders Clinic and Laryngeal Movement Disorders...

Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Management of Oromandibular Dystonia and Bruxism

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) refers to involuntary spasms of masticatory, lingual, and pharyngeal muscles. Phenomenologically, there are seven types of OMD: jaw-closing dystonia (JCD); jaw-opening dystonia (JOD); jaw-deviation dystonia (JDD); lip and perioral dystonia; lingual dystonia; pharyngeal dystonia; and combination OMD (1). OMD may be seen in isolation (focal dystonia), as part of a mor...

Error Recovery by the Use of Sensory Feedback and Reference Measurements for Robotic Assembly

Industrial robots need instrument or parts transport to do which requires coordinate to show the robot’s instrument, parts and body. When investigating the robot location, we are usually interested in measuring its location relative to a reference coordinate system. In this system it is attempted to make the assemble direction smaller by designing the sensor board and making use of an instrumen...
